How to Marry a Ukrainian Woman as a Foreigner
Every year, hundreds of Western men travel to Ukraine in search of the ideal Ukrainian bride.
Why is this the case?
Aside from being well-known for their beauty, Ukrainian ladies also have certain qualities that appeal to most men. They are devoted, feminine, and would make excellent wives.
The idea of marrying a traditional woman is a fantasy shared by many Western men. Because of their socio-economic status in the West, most Western women have shifted their focus away from the responsibilities of being a traditional wife.

If you’re meeting her in Ukraine, ask her to be your tour guide. Let her show you her favorite cuisine and frequent hangouts. There is always something new to try out in the country. She’ll most likely show you a side of it that you might not see in travel documentaries.
Win over her family
You may find your girlfriend’s family to be a bit loud and they will often speak their minds. They mostly follow patriarchal authority, meaning the father is the head of the family and the one who makes all the decisions.
If you want to win over your girlfriend’s family, you will need to impress the father. There is no doubt that he will test you to see if you are worthy of his daughter. If you win his approval and earn his respect, it’s less likely for you to find any resistance from her family when both of you decide to get married in the future.
Also be aware that the majority of Ukrainian families practice Christianity as their religion, so be prepared to say prayers before meals or go to Sunday church or religious gatherings.
It’s also in their culture to prepare lots of meals when you come over and visit. So be prepared to eat famous Ukrainian food such as borscht, varenyky (pierogi), holubtsi (stuffed cabbage rolls), and deruni (potato pancakes).
Give her the best gifts
Learn what she likes and dislikes. Many women enjoy receiving gifts from their partners. If done right, it might even help turn your girlfriend’s admiration into deep love.
By surprising your girlfriend with her favorite bouquet or by taking her to a romantic dinner, you’ll surely impress her with your wooing efforts. Gifting her with her favorite perfume and stylish clothes isn’t a bad idea either.

Be ready to commit
If both of you are ready to take your relationship to the next step, then you need to know how to get a marriage license. According to the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, both parties must have legal status in Ukraine.
It can be:
- Ukrainian citizenship
- Residency permit
- Visa
- Entry stamp on their passport
The marriage application must be submitted by the couple in person or by an authorized third party at any State Registration or Notary Service in Ukraine. The average waiting time is one month, from the date of application to the date of marriage registration.
The application will be considered annulled if the marriage is not registered within three months of the application.
If one or the other party has been previously married or widowed, they need to provide an original or certified copy of their divorce or spouse’s death certificate.
