Facts About Ukrainian Culture
“Traditional” best describes Ukraine. Their high regard for their customs, beliefs, and practices play an important role in their culture.
If you think the younger generation has abandoned the long-established customs of the country, you’re wrong. As a matter of fact, they still practice most of them.
Here are a few Ukrainian traditions you should know before dating a Ukrainian:
1. Many still wear Vyshyvanka.
Vyshyvanka is the culture’s embroidered shirt. It has always remained to be a part of the traditional Ukrainian costume.
Nowadays, most of the clothing brands in Ukraine have their own versions of it, with varying interpretations about its color, size, and shape. Surprisingly, this made the item well-known all over the world.
If you want to impress a Ukrainian woman, surprise her with a vyshyvanka. She will appreciate your effort in acknowledging her culture.
2. They have weird wedding traditions.
If you’re in Ukraine looking for a wife, some of these Ukrainian wedding facts might prove useful for you.
- Buying your bride from her family.
The groom along with his best man and family must visit the bride’s house on the morning of the wedding. During the visitation, he must present adequate monetary compensation to the bride’s family in exchange for the bride herself.
- Kidnapping the bride from her bridesmaid.
This is usually played during the wedding reception. The bride is held captive by her bridesmaid countless times throughout the night, and the groom must perform several dares before he can claim his wife back.
These wedding traditions are often done for entertainment, so they should not be taken too seriously.
3. They eat paper on the stroke of midnight.
As the clock strikes twelve on New Year’s Day, Ukrainians enjoy their glasses of champagne with burnt paper in them. They believe that a written wish will come true when swallowed.
So don’t be shocked when out on a New Year date with a Ukrainian and you’ll see her chewing paper. It’s just tradition.
4. They celebrate the Old New Year.
Ukrainians celebrate the new year twice, once on January 1st and the second time on January 13th. The second celebration follows the Julian calendar which was 13 days behind European time.
If you decide to spend the New Year in Ukraine or with a Ukrainian woman, be sure to stock up on supplies since you’ll be celebrating it twice.

A Foreigner’s Guide to Marrying in Ukraine
Online dating has become the new norm. The rise of online dating sites and matchmaking agencies has made it easier to meet, date, and marry someone outside of your country.
As a result, more interracial marriages are registered every day, and Ukraine is no exception.
People used to believe that marrying a foreign citizen is precarious, and therefore not a smart decision. However, this isn’t true. In fact, foreigners who marry and legally stay in Ukraine enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as any other Ukrainian citizen has.
Under the terms of marriage registration in Ukraine, here are the qualifications:
- must be of legal age for marriage (18 years old and above)
- no other existing marriage registration
- must be legally allowed to marry (e.g., you’re not blood relatives)
In order to register your marriage in Ukraine, you must have the following:
- internal passport of your bride, who is a legal citizen of Ukraine
- your passport with entry stamp
- notarized translation of your passport
It’s important to take note that you won’t be able to register your marriage if your passport doesn’t provide information on your marital status and if you lack the documentation to prove that you have no other legal marriage registration.
Marrying in Ukraine may take from several weeks to months. Keep in mind that both you and your future wife must have legal status in Ukraine, which can be:
- Ukrainian citizenship
- Residency permit
- Visa
- Passport (with entry stamp)
Once you’ve compiled these requirements, you can then submit your application for marriage at any State Registration or Notary Service in Ukraine. Failing to register within three months after its approval, your application will be annulled.
If either of you and your Ukrainian fiancé have been married before, you have to provide your certified copy of the certificate of divorce or your former spouse’s certificate of death.
For documents not issued in Ukraine, they must be authenticated in your home country. Make sure not to overlook this matter as the U.S. Embassy doesn’t have the power to certify documents issued in the U.S.
The Search for a Ukrainian Wife
You’re not to blame for wanting to date a woman from Ukraine. Their beauty is irresistible, and they’re the kind of partners you never knew you needed.
Their culture encourages the traditional upbringing of Ukrainian women. They have been oriented to be family and marriage-minded people. They are well-taught of their role as a woman, a wife, and as a mother of their future children.
Because of this, they value love, marriage, and relationships. They’d go through things with you and wouldn’t mind as long as they had you by their side.
At the same time, you’re also expected to take good care of them.
These are probably the main reasons why Ukrainian women are some of the most sought-after partners out there. If you’re looking for a forever partner, maybe you should search in Ukraine. Who knows, you might find your future wife there.
