Food and beverages are a big part of Ukrainian culture. In fact, it makes up a significant part of why Ukraine lifestyle is an experience all on its own. One of the other reasons why Ukraine’s way of life is so unique and distinctive is because of the weird Ukrainian traditions they observe and practice.

One particular example of their weird traditions is their unusual love for drinking. It isn’t just exclusive to men though, because even Ukrainian women can give you a run for your money in terms of alcohol tolerance. So if you’re looking to take a Ukrainian woman out on a fun date, here’s a piece of dating advice for you: take her to the bar, and you’ll surely have a memorable night.

Given their love for drinking, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Ukraine also has a wide array of drinks to offer. There’s certainly more to Ukraine than just vodka and cognac. Thus, here are unique Ukrainian drinks that you shouldn’t miss out trying while in Ukraine:

Horilka

Considered as a cousin of vodka, Horilka is regarded by many as the purest alcoholic beverage in the world. What makes it different from Russian vodka is that it’s made purely from wheat (whereas vodka is made out of wheat and oats). To truly enjoy this drink, it has to be chilled for at least two to three hours. Just be warned, this beverage is pretty strong so drink in moderation.

Spotykach

If you are craving for a sweeter drink, then try spotykach. Comprised of berries, spirits, lemon, mint, and rowanberries (and infused for several weeks), this drink is also known for making you relaxed. Interestingly, the drink got its name from stories of what happened to drinkers after a couple of shots. The name roughly translates to stumble. Although considered a ladies’ drink, it is by no means a mild cocktail.

Medovukha

It turns out honey can pack a lot of punch too. Medovukha is made from fermented honey with some added spices, berries, and even vodka during the later stages of fermentation. The result is a drink that’s low in alcohol but rich in flavor. Locals also believe that this drink has healing properties. So if you are feeling a little under the weather, perhaps a sip or two of Medovukha is all you need.

Varenukha

Varenukha is known as one of the oldest drinks in the country (created in the 16th century). Although somewhat similar to Horilka, the difference is in how they’re made. Varenukha is unusual because its ingredients composed of dried fruit, choice spices, honey, and vodka are all placed in a clay pot and put in the oven for 10 to 12 hours. As a result, this is a drink that can be enjoyed whether it’s hot or cold.

Nalyvkas and Nastoyankas

Although two different drinks, they are quite similar in terms of what they’re made of (fruits, herbs, and spices). The difference is their alcohol content. Regardless of which one you choose, both drinks are popular during the winter. In order to get the flavor right, they have to be meticulously prepared during the summer.

To truly appreciate the flavor of these drinks, it’s best to follow Ukraine traditions when drinking them. Some of these drinks could only be found in the country. Knowing that should be enough to convince you to try these drinks yourself.
